Home Care for a Cat with Diarrhea

A cat with diarrhea will only need to stay with the veterinarian in extreme cases. Most of the time you will have to take the cat home and deal with the mess that the cat will be making, added to that will be the stress of taking care of a sick cat.

Although generally cats are quite stoic and would not show you how they are feeling, this will not lessen your worries because you already know that they are sick.

Here are a few things that you need to do when you have a cat at home who is suffering from diarrhea:

1. Make sure that the cat is comfortable and as free from stress as possible. Remove any reason that may aggravate the illness that is causing the cat's diarrhea.

2. Keep the surroundings clean, a cat with diarrhea means that the immune system is already at a weakened state and any further incursion can only make matters worse.

3. If there is more than one cat in the house, you should isolate the cat with diarrhea from the others. The fecal matter of the sick cat may also carry the bacteria that are causing its diarrhea, and you really don't want to be dealing with more than one cat with that problem.

4. Follow the veterinarian's instructions on the treatments or medication, if any. It is best to write it down on a piece of paper and post it at a place that you can see often.

5. Ask your veterinarian if there are any supplements that you can give your cat to strengthen the cat's digestive system after the treatment or medication to avoid future problems.

6. Take care of yourself as well, because giving care to a sick pet can take its toll on you. The stress and the extra chores can make YOU sick if you are not careful, or at the very least it will compromise your ability to function and keep your temper in check.

Cats and other pets can enrich your life beyond measure, and the only thing that an owner can do is to give him the care he needs to live a longer and better life.

The happiness that a pet brings will never equal the small discomforts you will go through in taking care of them. Keep this in mind when things seem too trying in dealing with a cat with diarrhea.

HELP! My cat is really suffering!?
I really need help. My cat had diarrhea for a very long time until I finally found a food he can eat! He was on Natural Balance Duck and Pea. He was eating that for about 5 weeks when he developed a bladder infection. After a urinalysis, the vet said he had some crystals in his urine, his PH was alkaline, there was blood, white blood cells, and protein in his urine. She gave him a shot of something saying that it would fix everything and saying that the food may be the culprit in making his urine alkaline (pea is the first ingredient in the food!).. so after a few days, he did not get better, I called the vet and she gave me clavamox for him. In the mean time, he has;t gotten any better, so on Saturday I switched him over to a duck, turkey and chicken diet in hopes of his bladder issue getting better. Well, he again has diarrhea and he started urinating around my house! He can not hold it at all! I put him in the bathroom with a litter box and he is in and out of it every minute!! I'm serious! I do NOT know what to do! He is in so much pain I think and I have nothing to give him now! I don't think I am going to give him the clavamox tonight b/c it is clearly NOT working ! PLEASE HELP ME! he has been on the clavamox for 6 days. its doing nothing of course, I did not just switch the food, i mixed them slowly. and all food gives him Diarrhea.. so how can I feed him the uretic food that he just constantly has diarrhea? he already gets acidophiles.. can someone actually help me? interesting about the ash. I looked at the food he was on before (before the urinary problem) and there was no ash on the bag at all... the food he was on during did not say anything about ash and the one he is on now does not say anything about ash at all. He gets very expensive all natural grain free foods though.. so I hope the bag isn't lieing and that there truly is none. I also looked at the moisture content in all the foods, and all three, before, during and after, are all 10%.. so I dont think it is that either. I really think it is an alkalinity problem. He was last tested t 8 and cats are supposed to around 6. But I thought changing his food to something with meat as the first ingredient, though I knew he would get diarrhea, would help his urinary issue... ? I don't believe it is a block because there is urine coming out. Once he holds it long enough.. he does pee. I am thinking it is cystitis? I have worked at a vet office for over 6 years.. I know how to change over their food.. I have already spoken to the vet about his food... everyone is telling me to put him on uti food but he is allergic to chicken!!!!! and every uti food is chicken! !!! he is producing a little more than a quarter dollar size ever time he goes in. It seems he is going a bit less now. I gave him some wet food with water in hopes of keeping him hydrating. yes.. cystitis at this point makes the most sense.. there is no blood or white blood cells.. just a ph issue was tested when she gave the clavamox. I am thinking he needs some Meloxicam..

All three of my cats have diarrhea, what do I do?
Before you tell me, "take them to a vet," I already have. I've taken them all in to 2 different vets, both of which have just given them shots and albon suspension. After the albon suspension runs out, all these symptoms come back. I'm sure your next question is, "well, what are you feeding them?" For years, since I first got my two cats, I fed them Iams (kibble) without ever having issue. When my oldest (4) started throwing up his food, I began experimenting with different brands to see which he could handle better. Each time I've switched their food out, I've gone through the whole (mix in 1/4, then 2/4, etc...) until the new food has been switched in. Each time he would still throw up. I've gone through Science Diet, Natural Choice, Fancy Feast and Blue. They've been on Blue dry food for about 2 months now with apparently no problems, the oldest male eats only wet food, and we feed him the Facy Feast (which has been going well for the last 2 months). In the last week all this has started up with this diarrhea and stuff. My oldest male was even throwing up and not finishing his food. He stopped throwing up his food when I switched him over completely to wet food. He can't digest dry food apparently, cause my mom gave him like 8 kibbles one day and he threw that up, but whenever he eats wet he doesn't. My second cat also throws up her food from time to time, but not as much as he does and not on cue like that. I think hers is sometimes from eating too fast. She eats dry mixed with wet food morning and night, as does the third cat who now has diarrhea. The fourth cat I have (is about 7 months old and is the only short hair) is completely fine. All of the other three are sick. I want to say that because all of them are sick they either a) got into something (which I can't find ANYTHING that they could have eaten that could be causing this. b) have some sort of parasite (but why doesn't the 4th cat have it?) or c) I'm just having miserably bad luck. My cats don't even go outside except for the kitten, and she only goes out with us on a leash. Is there any way our dogs could be tracking something in from outside? Like I said, I've taken all three of these cats in, multiple times, to get checked/treated and always get the same bullshit. They are still sick. I don't know what to do. I have three long hair cats with diarrhea, you can imagine how messy that is. Not to mention every single one of them is miserable and there's nothing I can do about it. I'm tired of paying hundreds of dollars to these vets that don't do anything to help. God dammit I said I've taken them multiple times and gotten nowhere. I've even taken in samples of their diarrhea to have it tested and it always comes back negative for everything. I took my cats into the vet less than a month ago. They do NOTHING to help me. Unless I should just look for a third vet now???

my cat has diarrhea and is nursing?
we rescued an abandoned cat that is nursing 5 kittens (13 days old). she has had diarrhea for a week. Is it normal for nursing moms to have the runs? We switched her to a diet of boiled chicken and rice for 24 hrs ,but doesn't appear to be getting better. We are afraid to give her diarrhea medicine because it might affect the kittens. We can't take her to a vet because my mom is unemployed and didn't want us to rescue her in the first place. She doesn't appear lethargic or fevered or depressed, but thirsty and poops 5-7 times a day. What can we do short of spending a lot of money or taking her to the pound?

My cat is suffering from Diarrhea for last 4 days...How to cure my cat.. urgent and honest answers pls?
My cat is suffering from Diarrhea for last 4 days. She is 4 years old. Unfortunately I live in a very small village which is economically backward with lots of corruptions and fake doctors. I took my cat to a vet and he said medicine and injection for both cats and dogs are same!! I am not satisfied with that doctor. His clinic name is ''Dog Clinic'' and below that its written something like :''clinic only for dogs'' but still he said he can treat my cat with dog's medicines I think he won't be able to cure my cat but make her health more worse as he is a dog specialist NOT a Cat specialist I mean cats and dogs are two different species how come medication for both are same There are few dog specialists but no cat specialists in my village My cat has Diarrhea for last 4 days and she is not eating anything and is vomiting and has loose motions My cat is getting dehydrated How to treat my cat at home? Home remedies for cat to cure dehydration How to cure my cat by using home remedies These doctor handle pets like animals are not living things Are cats and dog vets same?
