Dog Urinary Infection - Why It's Not a Simple Infection
Urinary infection in dogs is usually caused by bacteria that enters the urinary system from the external body through the urethra. This simple infection can be easily cured with antibiotics.
However, infection of the urinary tract can be a sign of underlying health problems. The symptoms are rather similar in both simple and not so simple infections. Hence, it's crucial to recognise signs and changes in your dog's behaviour so that any infection is detected early. Kidney infection or pyelonephritis is an infection of the upper urinary tract, including the kidney. It is usually caused by bacteria infection that spreads from the lower to the upper urinary tract or kidney. If left untreated, kidney infection can lead to kidney failure, bacterial infection of the blood or fatality.
Bladder cancer rarely affects dogs. when it does, the prognosis is not good. Dogs with bladder cancer tend to suffer from urinary infection. This is due to the enlarged tumor preventing urine from flowing into and out of the bladder, resulting in build up of bacteria.
Bladder stones or uroliths can cause dog urinary infection. They are hard mineral deposits that can cause difficulty and painful urination. When the stones block the exit of urine, they can cause bacteria to build up in the urinary tract. Dogs aged four to six years old are commonly affected by bladder stones.
Prostatitis is a bacterial infection of the prostate gland in male dogs. Bacteria enter the prostate from the urinary tract or blood. Since untreated dog urinary infection may lead to prostatitis, it is important to be aware of the symptoms and bring your dog to the vet immediately. Although prostatitis and urinary infection are both caused by bacteria, the former is harder to treat while the latter can easily be treated with antibiotics.
Urinary infection in dogs may lead to secondary infection or be caused by an underlying health disorder. Hence, learn to recognise the symptoms and seek early treatment. By knowing your dog's normal habits and behaviours, you will easily notice when your dog is acting out of sorts.
