Symptoms and Treatment for Hives

Hives are raised, itchy welts on the surface of the skin caused by hypersensitivity to a substance. When the body encounters a substance that it is allergic or sensitive to, it releases histamines and other chemicals into the bloodstream. As a result, the capillaries and tiny veins leak. The leaking fluid gets trapped in the skin and lining membranes, which causes the localized swelling seen with hives. The welts, which are also called wheals, may remain small, or may spread large enough to join together. With hives, the center of the welt blanches, or turns white, when pressed.

When hives occur around the face, particularly around the lips and eyes, they are called angioedema. Angioedema may also occur on the hands, feet and throat. Hives can come and go suddenly, often without any apparent cause. It is estimated that up to 70% of hives go undiagnosed as to the cause, because they can appear hours after exposure to the irritant.

Symptoms of Hives:

Swelling, itchy and sometimes painful:
Your skin swells which is covered by small or sometimes large red colored rings or patches. Wheals or welts appear all over your body which is very itchy. Their shapes vary and keep disappearing and reappearing within minutes or hours. You can see raised pink lesions too all over your body in different sizes.

Difficulty in routine activity:
You may find difficulty in breathing and swallowing. Your level of anxiety increases which causes rapid and irregular heart beat. You may even suffer from loss of consciousness, dizziness or faintness.

Causes of Hives:

Allergy:
Being allergic to medications, nuts, eggs, berries, insect bites, jelly fish, can release the batch of
hives. If you are exposed to animal dander it may also cause an allergic reaction. Wearing tight clothes and jewelry which does not suit you can also be another reason for hives.

Exposure to extreme weather:
If you are being exposed to extreme temperatures you may suffer from this condition. Presence in extreme heat and extreme cold can create such problems.

Sweat:
Hives may start developing once you come in contact with sweat or water.

Home Remedies:

Hives treatment by using calamine lotion:
By applying this lotion it can grant you relief from the itchy feeling.

Hives treatment by using milk of magnesia:
By dabbing milk of magnesia on the lesions, provides some relief. As milk of magnesia is an alkaline solution it helps in removing the irritating itchy sensation.

Hives treatment by using herbal tea:
Calming our nerves is one of the important things to do, as stress makes the matter worse. Drinking peppermint or passionflower tea is very good. You can also try chamomile, valerian and catnip which also soothe your nerves.

Hives treatment by using cornstarch:
To stop the itching get 1/2 a tub filled with warm water, add 1/2 cup cornstarch and 1/2 cup baking soda.Soaking yourself at least once a day can make a lot of difference.

Hives treatment by using cayenne pepper:
Consume cayenne pepper capsules to help the healing procedure. You can also have vitamin C, vitamin E or zinc for quick relief.

Diet for Hives:

Avoid allergen triggering food:
Avoid food like eggs, strawberries, berries, peanuts, nuts, chocolates, cheese, tomatoes, soy products, shellfish and many more. Find out the food that is allergic to you and avoid having it.

Other treatment for Hives:

Use of Acupressure:
By massaging the trapezius points, you can find some relief. This trapezius muscle is found between the neck and the shoulder. By giving the vital pressure it may help you clear the red and white ringed patches of your body.

Knowledge and Persistence leads to success
I have always been fascinated by the question , why some people can and others can't? I spent years trying to figure this out. At first it was mainly for myself. I remember growing up with little confidence and under the impression that others were more capable than I was. The fact was that this impression was true. It was true because i believed it.

Hives? Allergies?
I've been changing my diet to a healthier one. I know I can't eat gluten, nightshades, meat, or dairy. I avoid all of them. Most of my diet complications have cleared but there's one exception: Hives Occasionally my stomach gets itchy and rashy. My lower back does as well and that's where I get the -most- hives. It's usually in the evening after I've been eating because in the mornings I'm never itchy. I assume it's a food issue but I just don't know what it is. Any ideas on what to do? I've kept a food diary but never noticed anything out of the ordinary with the newer foods I'm eating. As a note, I recently (as in a few hours ago) ate some mango gelato and raspberries. Is it sugar that's the culprit? I have had in the past a history of yeast problems. I wouldn't be surprised if that's what is aggravating everything. Still, I'd like to know your thoughts. Do you have any personal experience with a similar matter?

My 2 1/2 yr son eats ranch dressing all the time, but if it gets on his cheeks he gets hives. allergy??
He's gotten red arround the mouth before, but I never thought it could be the dressing (he eats it all the time) until a big smear in an odd shape got on his cheek and sat there thru some of the meal. After noticing redness I wiped his face and he had a welt (looked white and raised like your cheeks do when you get too cold out in the snow) and it was in the shape of the dressing. Should he avoid eating it? The first ingredient is soybean oil..... He just has never had any other signs of being alergic to anything specific.
