Life with your dog can be fun and exciting. There are times when this excitement can take a turn in the wrong direction. This is when your dog gets sick. There will be times in your dog's life that he will become ill. It is for this reason that it is important that you are aware of some of the common Health Problems In Dogs. There are the big three that you should be aware of when it comes to taking care of your dog.
Heart Disease
Heart disease is not just a health problem for humans. Dogs can suffer from this health concern as well. Heart disease in a cat can be present at birth or it can acquire through his lifetime. There are two basic types of heart disease that your cat can have. One is where the walls of the arteries thin out. The other happens when the valves to properly close and affect the flow of blood through the heart.
Heart disease in a cat can lead to heart failure. Just like in a person, heart disease can be a precursor to a failure of your dog's heart. This happens when the heart can not keep up with the blood needs of the body. There are few warning signs of heart failure in a dog. It is important to have your dog checked out often by your vet to keep tabs on this health problem.
Heartworm
Heartworm is one of the most well known health problems that a dog may have. Mosquitoes are the culprit that can cause your furry four legged friend to get heartworm. There is a greater risk of getting heartworm for dogs that spend time outdoors. It is not unheard of for an indoor dog to get heartworm.
When it comes to heartworm, the most important word is one of prevention. Treating heartworm in a dog can be very expensive. It is for this reason that vets concentrate on heartworm prevention. There are few different preventatives that are used. Many are oral pills that the dog will take daily or monthly.
Canine Distemper
This is one of those health problems that a dog can get that is often tracked back to being around other dogs. This disease is spread through contact with other dogs' secretions. There are a few symptoms of canine distemper to watch out for. They are pus coming out of the eye, loss of weight, and diarrhea. Distemper is usually prevented through a simple vaccine that your vet can give your dog.
Keeping your dog healthy and around for a long time lays firmly on your shoulders. It is up to you to know when something is wrong with your dog and to seek the proper medical attention that he needs. This is why it is so important for you to be aware of the many common health problems that your dog may face.

Has anyone breed dogs to be larger then normal?
Most people believe health problems in dogs is caused by their size and yet reseach shows that is not the casue. So, has anyone started a breeding program for larger then normal dogs (the giant breeds like Great Danes, Mastiffs, Newfoundlands) for the purpose of breeding out the health problems?
Please, this is not a question about adopting a dog from a shelter.

what are your views on pure bred dogs?
what are your views on pure bred dogs? due to a recent outrage the uk kennel club has had to review hence letting in cross breeds like a labradoodle. most pure bred dogs carry a health risk due to the over breeding the dogs trust charity has pulled out of dog shows like crufts and discover dogs because the health problems in dogs is to much and will only get worse which is true. i have owned dobermanns and labs all pure bred and KC reg i have a lab now with no health problems but times are changing what are ur feelings????
agreed that with a pure bred u know what u r getting but we have bred the dogs WE want for years now in the uk in genetics we have to be breeding from family
plus am not talking about dogs right now it is more the future of breeding because it will be interbreeding soon

What is the best diet to put my dog on? I'm thinking raw food. Anyone do that? Is it safe?
I have been reading up on wondering what by products mean in dry or canned pet food. I have a dog and it worries me that these by products are claimed to be left overs from parts of animals not used in a slaughter house or groceries stores. Plus the added artificial flavors, vitamins, and minerals have been discovered by the agriculture department they are not even close to being suitable for a pets nutrition after doing chemical tests on dry food. To make matters worse proven tests and reports state canned food is actually euthanize dogs/cats processed with added corn/carrots/etc. Now you wonder why dog/cat food stinks when you open that bag and get that icky stinch? All and all it makes me wonder why our four legged companions are having less and less life spans than they typically average with the on going progression of diseases and cancer problems. The health problems in dogs and cats used to not be this way but it's getting worse because of the crap that is processed in pets food. I don't like the idea of putting food in my dogs tummy when not even able to pronounce the ingredient or understand what it is 100%.
So what is the best diet to put my dog on???

Dog Insurance and Responsible Breeding?
Given that irresponsible breeding potentially causes health problems in dogs of all breeds it seems to me that those of us who research before we buy and pay top price for a good quality dog are subsidising the owners who purchase from Puppy Mills and Back Yard Breeders.
Should the pet health insurance companies take into account the background and experience of the breeder and the pedigree of the dog when deciding individual premiums?
Would this be one way of encouraging people to steer clear of Puppy Mills, pet shops and BYBs or would such a system simply be unmanageable?
