Gut-wrenching: How to cope with digestive upset in pets

All dog lovers have experienced that urgent need to take Spot out - usually in the middle of the night! - because he ate something that didn't agree with him. Urban pets are especially susceptible to gastric distress, as the high concentration of eateries and outdoor cafes means that dogs out for a walk are almost constantly tempted with a veritable smorgasbord of scraps to scarf up ... mmm, pizza crusts ... tortilla chips ... chicken wings!

Of course, there are other factors that contribute to digestive upset, from temporary illness to a course of antibiotics to switching food brands too abruptly. Whatever the cause, it's your job to help your dog through this uncomfortable experience - and while Saltine crackers might do the trick of settling your tummy, they won't work for Spot.

Just as you probably keep some type of stomach-soothing comfort food in your pantry to fend off indigestion for yourself, it's a good idea to keep a few effective items on hand to cope with random bouts of canine stomach upset. It's simple if you remember three P's: Pumpkin, probiotics, and protease (digestive enzyme from papaya).

Canned, pureed pumpkin - the very same ingredient used in the baking of seasonal pumpkin pies - is a high-fiber food that works well in cases of digestive distress. Just a few spoonfuls at meal time, mixed in with the kibble, helps to settle a dog's upset stomach. Most dogs tend to like the taste and texture of pureed pumpkin, but if yours turns up her nose, it can't hurt to add a sprinkling of cinnamon.

Probiotics, whether in the form of yogurt or acidophilus capsules, are live cultures that work to support the digestive system by improving microbial balance in the intestine (i.e. boosting good bacteria). They are very effective at preventing and treating diarrhea. If your dog is taking a course of vet-prescribed antibiotics, however, wait until two hours after admininstering the antiobiotic before you give a probiotic (you can hide the acidophilus capsule in a piece of cheese).

The digestive enzyme protease, meanwhile, is derived from the papaya fruit (but please don't serve your pet this exotic delicacy raw). The enzyme improves digestion, enables your pet's body to better absorb nutrients from his food, and protects him from allergies and immune disorders.

A healthy digestive system that doesn't produce uncomfortable eruptions - in the form of flatulence, burping, or diarrhea - is key to a healthy, happy pet, and goes a long way to keeping your home atmosphere pleasant. With a customizing pet food, probiotics and protease can both be worked in to your best friend's daily diet for noticeable results.

What to feed dog with upset stomach? - No boiled meats or rice, please?
We've been to the vet today. He's normally on Orijen 6Fish or Innova Evo Red Meat. Our regular vet is out till Monday, so another vet saw us when we took him in. The vet prescribed him antibiotics, said we should fast him for 24 hrs and then cook him a meal of boiled chicken and rice for 4 days. The problem is he's sensitive to chicken, and we never give him any grains in his food. I told the vet that he can't have chicken, so he said just boil any meat to render the fat out and mix it with rice to give him. The temp vet we saw today doesn't agree with raw feeding (which we do time to time). Our regular vet would give us better info, but he won't be in till Monday. The temp vet also said to just feed the dog the regular volume of meat and rice as dog food, but from experience from feeding raw, that's not accurate as raw food has a lot more water weight and so a person should feed anywhere from app. 2% to 3% of the dog's body weight in raw food. Any other suggestions? Can we cut out the rice and just feed him his regular raw diet then? When we do a raw diet for him we stick to rabbit or beef. PS. milk would probably make his stomach worse as most dogs have problems tolerating lactose. and plus, it's been a whole week that his stomach has been upset, so... The person we saw is not 'our vet' - he is a temp vet until our regular vet comes in on Monday. I'll listen to whatever our regular vet has to say, but as for this vet who doesn't agree with feeding raw or grain free, I'm sorry but I cannot abide by it. Its not like vets are really adequately trained in nutrition, really. Thanks for the comment. What I don't understand is why you would feed dogs a grain to help calm their stomach when it is grains that they have a hard time with? Our dog has an allergy to chicken and some sensitivities to grain. ... He didn't hire the temp vet. It's just a colleague. Our specific vet was referred to us for holistic reasons, and not the other one, though. And I don't really understand how rice calms their stomach down? Can anyone explain that?

Dog with upset stomach - vet?
I'm not sure when would be a good idea to take the dog to a vet. Her poop was fine this morning and she has had no diarrhea or vomiting. But she's a lot less energetic and I can hear the gurgling from her tummy from 5 feet away. Plus she has no appetite and is not very thirsty. Otherwise she seems okay. Unfortunately there's not a lot of grass in the city so she hasn't been able to graze all that much.

My dog has the diarreah really bad, what could cause this?
She has had it for about 5 days, I switched her food last week (i know this is a bad thing to do) she also got into some venison when she was outside, yesterday she acted like she didnt want to eat, i mixed some chicken and rice together she ate some but her appetite is still off as is her attitude. She is not vomiting and she has a vet appointment today at 130, i didnt take her sooner because i thought this was from the food change and would pass, she is a shepherd mix and pretty overweight..i have also tried giving her some canned pumpkin as i read this can be good for dogs with upset stomachs, no diarreah today but still reluctant to eat and listless attitude perked up a little this morning and ate some chicken and rice and a little pumpkin...im extremely worried and any input or opinion would be appreciated!
