Dogs Vomiting And Diarrhea

When Should You Take Your Vomiting Dog to the Veterinarian?

  1. Weight loss: Even in a dog that's overweight, sudden weight loss accompanied by vomiting means that your dog needs to go to the vet as soon as possible. Losing weight quickly and unexpectedly can mean that your dog has a serious health condition.
  2. Lethargy or sleepiness: If your dog is vomiting and has no interest in playing, take him to the vet as soon as possible. Most of the time, dogs will vomit and then go back to normal fairly quickly. If they don't, that's a strong clue that there's a reason for their vomiting beyond eating something that didn't agree with them. Your vet will be able to run the right tests to find out what is bothering your dog.
  3. Vomiting and diarrhea: Vomiting combined with diarrhea not only can dehydrate your dog quickly but also can be an indication of a serious bacterial or viral infection. In young puppies, older dogs, and in dogs with weakened immune systems, these infections can be deadly. Take your dog to the vet immediately if you notice this combination of symptoms.
  4. Bloated or swollen stomach: A bloated belly can indicate many problems, a number of which are serious conditions that can hurt your dog. Only a vet can figure out what's causing a bloated stomach and can treat it.
  5. Worms: Sometimes you may notice that your dog is scooting his bottom on the carpet and is throwing up, even if not at the same time. If you notice these two things happening, take your dog to the vet to be treated for possible worms. Medications are available to help your dog get rid of the worms, but you need to get them from your vet.
  6. Blood in the vomit: Blood in your dog's vomit is a sign that there's bleeding somewhere in your dog's gastrointestinal system - the path from your dog's mouth to his bottom. This is a serious condition that means your dog needs to go to the vet immediately.
  7. Disinterest in food: Giving your dog a limited diet after it's thrown up is wise, but you should be concerned if more than 24 hours pass between vomiting and eating. Dogs normally want to eat after they've vomited, even to the point of sometimes eating the vomit. When your dog loses interest in food, that's an indication that there's more wrong than just a slight upset stomach.
  8. Vomiting more than usual: Dogs typically vomit once or twice when they've eaten something that doesn't agree with them or when they've eaten grass to make themselves throw up. If you notice that your dog is vomiting more than that or is vomiting more than usual, take it to the vet as soon as possible. You need to find out why your dog is vomiting, and your vet is the best person to do this.
  9. Is trying to throw up, but nothing's coming up: If you dog is trying to throw up but nothing is coming out - what humans may call "dry heaves" - this is a sign that your dog needs to go to the vet immediately. In dogs, this can indicate a serious condition where its stomach has flipped. This requires immediate surgery or else the dog will die.
  10. Any other sign of illness: When in doubt, take your dog to the vet. Because dogs don't throw up or vomit as much as cats, frequent vomiting and other signs of illness can indicate that something is seriously wrong with your dog.

Remember to always call your vet if you're concerned about your dog. You know your dog better than anyone, so be cautious and have it checked by your vet if something seems wrong.

* Note that there is a difference between vomiting and regurgitation. A dog might regurgitate its food if it eats too fast or if something is wrong with its esophagus or stomach. Usually, the food comes up whole and undigested (although if there is a blockage in the outflow of the stomach, it may vomit digested food). Generally, regurgitation occurs within 30 minutes of eating; vomiting can occur up to 24 hours after eating.

Dog vomiting and diarrhea?
My dog has been vomiting yellow liquid that we have been told is stomach acid. He has been throwing up that for about 2 weeks and we took him to the vet, gave him medication for gastritis and he is still vomiting. Now He is starting to have diarrhea, not severely. What can he possibly have? I have contacted the vet again and we have an appointment tomorrow but the vet does not know what he has. I want to go there and give some suggestions. He has changed in diet to a semi-bland diet. The vet told us to.

dog vomiting and diarrhea?
i just came home from the vet.my dog had been (still is a little) vomiting and has diarrhea since this morning and he keeps trying to pee but nothing but drops come out.the vet said he has an enlarged prostate.that explains the peeing thing but i feel like he was too quick to diagnose him and i want to make sure it cant be anything else.he keeps cringing too and making this wheezy whine sound like he's in pain. They gave him three different meds but he wont take them, and when i tried to put them in his throat it worked for a second then he vomited again.this is really stressing me out and i cant get a hold of my vet because he left for the day.any advice?

Dog vomiting and diarrhea during travel, no vet to be had till tomorrow.?
My husband is a truck driver and is not able to get to a vet till about 6 am tomorrow morning. He was stuck in the middle of nowhere and is heading to the vet right now. Still several hundred miles from the nearest animal hospital. That means we are trying to get to the vet so if your answer is to take the dog to the vet . . . we know that! Sudden onset vomiting and diarrhea started last night. Mucas in stool. He is only 9 months old, mastiff sharpei mix. Cant keep water down either. Any help to hold him would be nice. Vets are hard to find when you are half way across the country. We are trying.

Dog vomiting and diarrhea but acting fine?
My 7 month old chihuahua woke up this morning with really bad diarrhea, like an explosion. It was a regular brown color but as I was cleaning i saw two or three tiny bright red blood spots around the area but not in the poop. Throughout the day he had 2 more accidents and vomited once. He has been acting perfectly fine all day, playing and eating. I'm thinking someone may have given him some human food since he's not used to it. My other puppy vomited once today too but has been acting fine. I'm pretty worried. Help?

Adult dog vomiting and diarrhea, what is it?
Two days ago, my year and a half Maltese started throwing up and vomiting. She has been very lethargic, but she also plays like normal. She doesn't have her shots. She's also on her period. Idk, if this is parvo or not. She has a regular appetite so idk if that's ruled out. I need to know if this is normal or something to take her to the vet for. Please, any info will help. Thank you.
