Could You Identify Common Dog Symptoms of Illness?

Being able to recognize common dog symptoms of illness can help save your dog in an emergency situation by providing effective first aid. Your efforts could buy you some precious time while you take your dog to a medical treatment center.

In order to decide whether your dog has symptoms of an illness, you'll need to observe his behavior on a regular basis. You should pay attention to all his little weird habits and quirks every day. Does your dog have a tendency to chase his tail when it's time to go out for a walk? Or does your dog chase his tail in the hopes of biting it? If it's the second option, then your dog could have a bacterial infection.

By knowing your dog and understanding some basic facts about dogs, you can establish whether something is right or possibly wrong about his health. A dog's body temperature is normally around 39 degrees Celsius or 102 degrees Fahrenheit. You have to take your dog's temperature with a rectal thermometer. Make sure to have a pair of gloves and some alcohol swabs handy to clean the thermometer after you've taken the dog's temperature.

To take your dog's temperature, do it while your dog is calm and standing up on all fours. If he is tired because he just came back from a long walk, it's even better as he may cooperate a little more. Do not allow your dog to sit down while taking his temperature as the thermometer could get pushed up inside of him and it could puncture or damage bodily tissues.

You can also check your dog's pulse to look for any other symptoms of an illness. To check his pulse, place both hands on his heart, in his inner thigh or in his front legs. These points make it easy for you to feel his pulse. Count the number of heartbeats during a 15-second period (keep an eye on a clock or a watch) and then multiply that number by 4 to get his average heartbeat per minute. Normal heart rate varies according to the breed, size or age of the dog. Larger dogs normally have lower heart rates and smaller dogs normally have faster heart rates.

A dog may also show symptoms of illness or injury through a change in their behavior. For example, your dog could ignore your commands, withdraw from the family or other dogs, refuse to move, whine a lot, refuse to eat, refuse to urinate or defecate or remain really quiet.

You should always keep an eye open for other dog symptoms of illness that could indicate physical pain. If your dog constantly licks or scratches himself or if he appears to be limping, this is a clear indication of pain. Bring your dog to see a veterinarian as soon as you can. It will you save you time, frustration and money in case the illness or pain continues to worsen. But most importantly, you will help your dog by taking him to a vet that will know how to relieve his pain. Keep an eye open for these basic dog symptoms and your dog will thank you.

My dogs symptoms????
Wel I just got a dog 2 days ago and today I took him to get groomed and to get his vaccines. The dog groomer told me he has an ear infection so I got some meds from the vets office and the vet confirmed he had it. I told him about biting his paws and tail because the dog groomer had told me as well that the brown on his feet were from chewing. my dog is a bichon mix and its about 2-3 years old. He cries a lot and drools a lot as well. They told me to get him neutered but my mom is against it because she wants him to breed at the most 1 time because she wants another pup for herself. So are there any other ways to fix the chewing, drooling, and whining? I will get him neutered eventually but not right now. Best answer will be awarded 10pts. Honestly If you're going to be rude don't answer at all. You speak "passionately" about dogs yet you're so ignorant and rude. Every single time I post something about dogs someone has to say something rude. Please don't waste my time. Oh yea and this dog might not even be unhealthy! I've had it for 2 days and I don't know its history so maybe the ear infection is recent. And drooling, chewing, and whining might be due to discipline. The chewing due from allergies, salt from the snow, don't discriminae this poor dog and say he shouldn't breed. He's perfectly fine with no serious problems. And his temperament is great. Don't assume something before you know the details.

Dog symptoms of labor but no delivery...?
I adopted a dog about a month ago only to find out over the weekend that she is pregnant. The lady we adopted her from admitted that she was with her male but she supposedly didn't know that she was in heat. When we took her to the vet he checked her out and said that she wasn't lactating but that she was dilated. She has shown some signs over the last few days such as vomiting, diarrhea, laziness, etc. but then the symptoms go away. The vet said that he assumed she would have had the pups by Monday but here we are on Wednesday with no puppies. I know that she didn't lose the litter because I can feel them moving EVERY time that I place my hand on her. I have heard that they can stop labor, but I don't know if that is true or not. I have read everything that I can on how to care for her during labor and my aunt is a midwife for dogs but this just doesn't seem normal to me. Any help? With all of these symptoms when can I expect her to go into labor? I want to be with her through it but she seems to have all the symptoms with no labor and I don't want to stay on house arrest with my kids unless I know she is actually in labor. I did call the vet and he said to just ride it out. She went to the Humane Society vet and he said not to bother bringing her in unless I am getting her spayed which would result in aborting the puppies. I'm not going to do that so basically I can only ask for help. People who have EXPERIENCE only please respond. I don't need to hear to take her to the vet since I have already tried...thanks. Her temp has been fluctuating in the 99 degrees range since the vet. I have been taking it twice daily and the highest it has been is 101.1 and the lowest is 99.3.
