Dogs Food Allergies
Coping with Dog Food Allergies
Dealing with allergies of any kind can be incredibly uncomfortable and frustrating, never mind dog food allergies which can be rather difficult to pinpoint. Just what is it in that 20-ingredient pack of dog food that is causing these dog food allergies? How can you perform testing to see just what your dog is allergic too? Heck, how do you even know that your dog is suffering from dog food allergies?
Dog allergies all tend to have similar symptoms, all of which involves the scratching and pawing and chewing of some part of the body. The part of the body that is usually being scratched and chewed is related to his area of allergy. If a dog is having a dog food allergy, it may be the face that is being pawed, or your dog may be chewing at his abdominal area. As a result of the chewing, licking and scratching, dog skin problems may also arise due to a dog food allergy.
If you are wondering how you can start to determine and treat your pet's dog food allergies, then you have come to the right place.
1) Substitute his food: A great way to start the process of determining dog food allergies is to substitute the meat portion of your dog's food with a different meat. For instance, if the food you are feeding your dog is beef-based, switch it up with a lamb-based food and see if that cures the problem. Lamb is a safe choice as it is thought to be "non-allergic".
NOTE: You can also choose to buy some "allergy free formulas" of dog food, but this may not necessarily be the best dog food for your pet. Check out a number of different mixes, and always aim to purchase foods that do not include a lot of chemical preservatives, dyes, colors, or "filler" foods.
2) Introduce new foods slowly: though you may be anxious to try a new food with your dog to see if it helps his allergies, you need to introduce any new foods to your diet gradually over a week. Start off with a 4:1 ratio of old dog food to new, and build it up from there to a 3:2 ratio, a 2:3 ratio, 1:4 ratio and then a full serving o the new food.
3) Consult your Veterinarian: Vets do have the ability to perform some allergy tests on your dog to see what may be the issue. If the allergy is not very severe, they you may want to treat it symptomatically (with anti-histamines, cold compresses and medicated baths); however, if it is a severe allergy, then the cost to have the allergy testing done is well worth it.

Has anyone ever encountered a dog that seems healthy but is always throwing up?????
My friend's dog, a 2 yr old Boston, is constantly throwing up. He is allergic to pretty much every brand of dog food (allergies to corn, starch, wheat ect...) since day one he's been throwing up 2 times a day. Mostly after eating. He was on steroids for his allergies but isnt' anymore. Nothing can be diagnosed. The vet's are at a standstill as to what his problem is. He has ulcers, allergies but yet... nothing has worked - different foods, pills ect.
The dog 'seems' happy, he doesnt seem to be in pain... I know it's hard to tell, he's a dog he can't say for sure if he is in pain or not... but you can tell when a dog's not 'himself'...
any advice, suggestions, comments, theories ?!?!!!???
** These are actual 'heath' problems related to allergies.. it's not because he eats too much, not enough or too fast.

dog food allergies?
i buy dry and wet food from the vet its royal canine sensitivety, it has a single source for carb and single source for protien. i hate haveing to go pick it up from the vet all the time and waiting for my orders to come in, so do you think instead of buying the can food i could mix groundbeef in with the kibble i buy from the vet. I buy huge bags of kibble from vet, so i dont have to go and pick it up all the time. Also it is duck and rice flavor she eats, so maybe i could cook turkey or chicken or liver?
she will still be eating the kibble, so she will get the nutients from that. The only reason for the canned food or the meat I make her is that she likes it better when i mix it with her kibble. Thanks for answering anways though.
I wish people would read the whole question before answering, it gets annoying when you answers that do not even match the question. In the question I said to add meat to her kibble not just give her meat.

Dog food Allergies?
I noticed lately that my black lab has a few problems. She had a slight rash on her stomach, but I think it's gone now. She also got her hot spots back. She had them months ago, and I took care of them and they healed up. In a few places she's got very small round patches of fur missing. Like the size of a small fingernail. It's not too bad. In fact, I didn't even notice until I gave her a bath last Monday. I just gave her another REALLY GOOD scrubbing, and got all the loose hair off her legs that I could. (Maybe her legs are itchy and irritated b/c all the shedding hair stuck under there and pickin' at her legs? Her hair is REALLY short and picky) But I was wondering if it might be food allergies. Her ears also get really oily. Why might that be? She always acts like her ears bother her, but her ear canals are spotless, and the outer ear barely gets dirty. She was on Authority, but I switched her to Chicken Soup last Thursday.
How long might it take for her to show improvements if it /is/ food allergies. And is Chicken Soup a good food for a dog with allergies? (Again, not sure if it /is/ allergies, though)
I don't bathe her every week. I just bathed her today b/c she was really dirty and her fur was all oily from the flea medicine, and she looked... just... mangy-like.....
No, believe me, it's not mange. I know what mange looks like, and... Neh, that's not what she has. It's not serious at all. She's only got 2 small hot spots on her legs. The rash is gone.... Meh...

Dog food allergy?
I have a 14 month old yorkie and a 5 month old yorkie. The adult eating the puppies food and vice versa was becoming an issue, so about a week and a half ago I switched to Canidae because both puppies and adults can eat it. Well, the older run has started itching nonstop and I'm thinking, no it's due to the food. Is there another food that both pups & adults can eat? The older one was gaining weight eating the pups food. I tried feeding seperatly, but the puppy won't eat, unless her big sister is right beside her.
