When Should I Use Natural Heartworm Meds For Dog Treatment?

Heartworm disease is a potentially fatal but wholly preventable condition in dogs. Heartworm larvae are transmitted from animal to animal by mosquitoes. Some chemical treatments for heartworm are fairly toxic to your dog.

This article looks at when you should use natural heartworm meds for Dog Treatment and when you should use chemical meds.

There are a number of components for an effective heartworm treatment for your dog. Natural meds have a role to play as do chemical meds. Let's take a look at each of them.

1. Treatment to prevent infection

Natural heartworm meds are excellent for preventing your dog from getting infected in the first place. The chemical alternative is pretty toxic stuff so you don't want to be exposing your dog to this on a long term basis. You need to give your dog a herbal supplement that makes him less attractive to mosquitoes and will also kill any larvae that do get into his bloodstream. You also want to spray him with a herbal mosquito repellent to keep them off him. You need to do both these steps consistently throughout mosquito season.

2. Heartworm disease testing

It is really important to have heartworm disease testing probably around every six months or so. This depends on how bad mosquitoes are where you live and how much your dog is outside. Hopefully, if you are consistent about prevention, he won't get infected, but no prevention is foolproof. So if he does get infected it's always best to spot it early. Ask your vet for guidance.

3. Treatment of heartworm disease

Hopefully he won't ever get to this position, but if the heartworms do turn into adults and take a hold in his heart and lungs, then this is where chemical treatments should come in. this treatment should only ever be done under the guidance of a veterinarian due to potential complications in the heartworms dying off.

So as you can see, there is a place for natural heartworm meds for Dog Treatment in the prevention of heartworm infection. Make sure you are consistent throughout mosquito season and hopefully you'll be able to avoid the chemical treatments altogether.

Good Samaritans, ungrateful owners?
When my husband (whose a K-9 police officer), came home from work today, he told me about his day, and what happened that really unnerved him. I'll go through the events as they happened. Yesterday a dog in a neighboring suburb escaped from his backyard and was hit by a car sometime afterwards. Well this elderly couple stopped and picked up the dog, and took him to a vet right away. He had a broken leg and some soft tissue damage, but was otherwise ok. The couple paid for the dogs treatment, then took him home for the night to recuperate. The next morning the elderly man went to my husbands police department to report the found dog, along with a picture. That same morning in the suburb outside of the city, the owners went to their police department to report the dog missing to animal control. An hour later the animal control officer called the owners with the good news that their dog had been found. She also told the owners that the dog had been hit by a car, but he'd already been taken to the vet for treatment. Not even 30 minutes later the owners went to their police department to try and file dog stealing charges on this elderly couple that saved their dog. This is where my husband got into the picture. He was at the station, so he took the call. He went to the home of the elderly couple that had found the dog, to get their side of the story. That's when he found out that they picked up a hurt dog on the side of the road, then took the dog to the vet without expecting anything in return, and that they had already filed him as a found dog with their animal control. He was disgusted with the dogs owners because they knew this information, yet they still wanted to file theft charges. So I ask, would you file theft charges on someone for saving your dog, reporting them found, and not expecting a penny in return? The dogs owners lived in a suburb outside of my husbands jurisdiction. All he could do was hand the dog over to animal control. Neither police department would take their theft report because nothing was stolen.

Did i do the right thing?
This lady that lives two houses down from me has a dog with a large tumor on chest, So i went over there and offered her a ride to the vets office and too pay for it after she accepted and the dog got the tumor removed. I told her not to worry about paying me back for the vet bill since she said she will when she gets the money. I paid $400.00 for the dogs treatment and this lady and dog are both pretty old so i felt bad for both of them. Did i do the right thing? I work at an animal shelter so i figured i had to do something and since that lady had NO ONE besides her dog i thought i would do i good thing but a couple family members said i should make her pay me back but i don't think i should. What do you think?
