Swollen Abdomen In Dogs, Signs of A Serious Disease?
One of the most commonly asked pet health questions is how serious is a swollen abdomen in dogs? The answer is simple, but not easy. Swollen abdomen in dogs is indicative of a serious disease and one of the most serious diseases is Bloat. Dog health can be severely affected due to Bloat in which the dog's abdomen quickly gets filled with gas, usually in an unbalanced manner, and can become as tight as like a drum. A very serious dog health related disease, Bloat or gastric dilation can be life-threatening.
While there are many regular and normal reasons for a dog's abdomen to swell including excess weight, pregnancy, or an enlarged stomach after a meal in puppies, if none of these reasons apply to your dog's abdomen being swollen, then you must get your doggie checked by a vet. There can be many reasons why the dog heath is affected by a swollen abdomen and some of the causes can be age, liver disease, heart disease, uterine infection or pyometra, internal bleeding, and hormonal abnormalities.
Bloat (Gastric Dilation) - A Serious Dog Health Problem
In canines, however, Bloat or gastric dilation is a very serious dog health concern that tends to be life-threatening. Typically, Bloat is a condition when the air and other gases get trapped in the stomach causing the abdomen to swell like a balloon and become so tight that it can be played like a drum. Usually, if the dog gets gassy, his abdomen will get back to the regular size within a couple of hours of a meal. However, when affected by sudden bout of Bloat, the abdomen may swell to such a size that it can twist itself inside the abdominal cavity - a condition that is called torsion - and thus, cut off the blood supply leading to sudden death with 6-12 hours.
pet health questions such as which breeds are susceptible to Bloat and swollen abdomen and what can you do to protect dog health are as relevant as important. Bloat is very common in all large breeds as well as dogs with deep-chests including breeds such as: German Shepherds, Great Danes, Poodles, Rottweilers, Bloodhounds, Irish Setters, Boxers, Golden Retrievers, St. Bernards, Labrador Retrievers, Dobermans, Mastiffs and Bullmastiffs, who are especially vulnerable to this condition.
While dog abdomen-swollen is a serious dog health concern, some veterinarians advise you remedies that are really simple and easy to implement. To prevent Bloat and ensure overall good dog health you can feed the pooch yogurt, digestive enzymes, feed small meals, give space to eat his meal, feed pure and natural dog food and give him plenty of exercise.
You must treat Bloat as an emergency ALWAYS! Rush your pooch to the animal emergency hospital so that you can have more time to spend with him, instead of saying Good Bye!
If you think your dog may have a swollen abdomen you should take him to your vets straight away. You can also look at some of our dog health articles for some information. You can also ask pet health questions at our pet health forum.
Oklahoma Lawyers Only Please?
I realize state laws vary so I'm asking for Oklahoma Lawyers opinion please and I realize it's only an opinion so no liability incurred nor expected by this question towards you.
I live in the country on secluded acerage so there is no need to chain or fence my two pit bulls. They are tremendous babies to me however they are protective of "their" property. One has bitten before and the other hasn't but I realize it can happen at any time.
What can I do to protect myself (other than put up Beware of Dog signs which means nothing legally)?
Everyone that hears Pit bulls thinks of ferocious dogs and this simply isn't the case but in a court of law that breed is demonized so I wish to protect myself in all common sense manners.

my mother and i have dobermans out of the same litter. We both recieved half off vouchers to get them fixed.?
we both got a half off voucher from the humane society to get them fixed. so i called and made the appointment The vet never told me to restrict food and water the night before, i found that out online. We get to the vet today they swooped in and took my dog away from me immediately and said ok, you can call and check to see if she is ready later. I had never been to this vet before, so i had never even met the man about perform surgery on my dog. I asked to speak to the vet before i left my dog there, he came out and pretty well made it a very fast hi and bye. My mother and i left, the time came to go and pick them up. We get there and they hand my dog back over as fast as they took her to begin with. I noticed that she had feces attached to her behind. I asked the lady to get it off and she did. I continued with the payment. I then asked if there were any pain medicines that i should be getting, she said no. So i asked if i had an option to get some if i wanted, she said to give my dog an aspirin, and that was it. They did not give me any instructions on how to care for my dog, signs that there may be a problem or anything. So my question is, are most vets this way? Or were we treated differently because we had a half off voucher? Or maybe the vet office was just a bad one? I don't know the answer to this question and to be honest its not my main concern. I have my poor snickers home with me now, she has been on the couch ever since we got her home, vomiting occasionally. I have no idea what i can do for her, and she just seems miserable. They did not give me any pain medicines for her and i highly doubt that an aspirin will help her. I was under the impression that this was a major surgery and she would be in a lot of pain after wards, so we were supposed to have pain medicines made available. I thought about calling another vet office and asking their opinion, and maybe if they could give her something for pain. I doubt that they would give her medicine, but its worth a shot right? Was this a normal trip to the vet for getting my dog fixed?
