Dog Has Upset Stomach
Gut-wrenching: How to cope with digestive upset in pets
All dog lovers have experienced that urgent need to take Spot out - usually in the middle of the night! - because he ate something that didn't agree with him. Urban pets are especially susceptible to gastric distress, as the high concentration of eateries and outdoor cafes means that dogs out for a walk are almost constantly tempted with a veritable smorgasbord of scraps to scarf up ... mmm, pizza crusts ... tortilla chips ... chicken wings!
Of course, there are other factors that contribute to digestive upset, from temporary illness to a course of antibiotics to switching food brands too abruptly. Whatever the cause, it's your job to help your dog through this uncomfortable experience - and while Saltine crackers might do the trick of settling your tummy, they won't work for Spot.
Just as you probably keep some type of stomach-soothing comfort food in your pantry to fend off indigestion for yourself, it's a good idea to keep a few effective items on hand to cope with random bouts of canine stomach upset. It's simple if you remember three P's: Pumpkin, probiotics, and protease (digestive enzyme from papaya).
Canned, pureed pumpkin - the very same ingredient used in the baking of seasonal pumpkin pies - is a high-fiber food that works well in cases of digestive distress. Just a few spoonfuls at meal time, mixed in with the kibble, helps to settle a dog's upset stomach. Most dogs tend to like the taste and texture of pureed pumpkin, but if yours turns up her nose, it can't hurt to add a sprinkling of cinnamon.
Probiotics, whether in the form of yogurt or acidophilus capsules, are live cultures that work to support the digestive system by improving microbial balance in the intestine (i.e. boosting good bacteria). They are very effective at preventing and treating diarrhea. If your dog is taking a course of vet-prescribed antibiotics, however, wait until two hours after admininstering the antiobiotic before you give a probiotic (you can hide the acidophilus capsule in a piece of cheese).
The digestive enzyme protease, meanwhile, is derived from the papaya fruit (but please don't serve your pet this exotic delicacy raw). The enzyme improves digestion, enables your pet's body to better absorb nutrients from his food, and protects him from allergies and immune disorders.
A healthy digestive system that doesn't produce uncomfortable eruptions - in the form of flatulence, burping, or diarrhea - is key to a healthy, happy pet, and goes a long way to keeping your home atmosphere pleasant. With a customizing pet food, probiotics and protease can both be worked in to your best friend's daily diet for noticeable results.

Canidae grain free, Merrick Before Grain, or Merrick Wilderness Blend?
My Bluetick Coonhound Dale (the 4 yr old) was on Nutro Venison and Rice/Oatmeal until recently when I had to switch due to issues with Nutro - and my dogs were getting sick off of it when they never had before. My 9 yr old Bluetick that had thyroid issues started losing weight rapidly (like meany of the dogs on the consumer site) but we figured her thyroid levels needed adjusted as she was still eating with gusto and playing - she died before we could get her to the vet. My other two dogs had upset stomachs and were eating grass and throwing up so after reading the consumer site - I thought it best to switch dog foods. For years - Nutro was a good food and my dogs did well on it - until Pedigree Mars took it over recently is when my issues with it started. I just hope that they don't have an issue with the Nutro also having problems with salmonella and are choosing not to disclose it because Nutro Natural choice is supposed to be more holistic of a dog food - I wouldn't want to see more dogs getting sick.
Anyway - I switched to Canidae and everyone is doing well on it, except Dale looks a little more tubby than he did on the Nutro Venison Rice Oatmeal - like he has an intolerance to the barley and the millet in it. I was told that dogs can have an intolerance to grains and even if they don't show an allergy symptoms it can make them gain weight. So I was thinking I would either change to the Merrick Wilderness (lower protein- 24% - he had no issues with rice/oatmeal in other dog food), Canidae grain-free (since they are doing well on it save for the grain and I might stick with Canidae because of that - 34% protein), or Merrick Before Grain Buffalo (32% - and the ingredients sound good for grain - free plus I hear good things about Merrick).
I was considering grain-free because a lot of people advocate feeding either grain free or Raw and say their dogs do well on it. Now the Merrick carbs sound good as they are complex carbs and brown rice which most dogs tolerate well (better than barley or millet) - so that was my other option for feeding. Does anyone have any opinions or experience (save for the Canidae grain-free that isn't out yet?)

Dog has upset stomach, part 2?
I recently asked a question about my dog who had threw up 2 times yesterday his food and 3 times early in the morning (5 am) yellow bile 3 times.
We left to do some errands and get rice and chicken but when we came back my dog was really hyper probably from resting all day, I didn't want to upset his stomach any more than it is already.
Now I'm not sure whether to feed him the rice and chicken or just his regular food, and if the rice and chicken how much of each, he usually has 3/4 cups of dry food.
We haven't fed him since last night just so his stomach could settle down. More information if needed is on my other question. If you need any other info just ask and I'll answer.
Thanks so much!!!
I don't really want to wait another day because he hasn't had any food for 24 hours to keep his stomach stable
We just went out to get chicken and rice and I'm not sure about this slippery elm bark but.....I'll check it out in more detail, thanks

My dog has upset stomach, don't know what's really going on?
My tic hound/pointer mix named Katie hasn't been feeling herself the past couple of days. This evening she did not touch her food at all, and she usually gobbles it up. We've had her for a few years and she is like 4 or 5 now, and has never really been sick. Overall, she has been pretty healthy. She gets plenty of exercise every night when my dad takes her to the park and has a friend who she plays with. My dad's friend who he walks with at the park, she is a large animal vet, so she gave my dog a complete physical. Her intestines and bowels felt normal, and she didn't have a temperature. Her poop looked normal also. Within the past couple of days that she has been sick, she hasn't had any runny stools or any vomiting. My dad's friend did notice tonight that she isn't acting herself and looks lethargic. My dad said she ate grass at the park, so that indicates that she needs something to help her digest. Tonight is the only night she hasn't eaten, but she ate very slowly this morning and yesterday. She is just not her perky self, but I don't understand why she wouldn't eat her food, but yet her poop is normal and when my dad's friend checked her out, she didn't have a temperature and her bowels felt normal. I'm not trying to get a medical diagnosis over the internet, but just was wondering if anyone has any ideas as to what is bothering her? I'm taking her into the vets tomorrow if she doesn't eat her breakfast. She's not even getting excited over treats today, and that is her favorite thing.
On Sunday, she might have gotten into a deer carcass, because my dad and his friend noticed one and her dog and my dog could have gone over and eaten some of the dead deer. But, there wasn't any blood on my dog's snout indicating that she ate the dead deer. I just think it's weird that she all of a sudden just stopped eating without any vomiting or runny stools within the past 2 days.

my dog is acting really weird and im really worried?
my boxer is now 3 years old and we also own a 4 year old pit bull, whom which my boxer has been with her whole life, but about 4 months ago we got another pit bull.
It seems like ever since we got the puppy my boxer has been acting really strange and the last few weeks I have been getting worried about her.
A week ago or so my dad came home and my boxer Sammi had thrown up in her kennel and been acting just really weirded out about it, so he let her out side and cleaned up her bed. But when he went to let her in, she just wouldn't. I guess she just ran up and down along the fence and would throw up and either eat it, or grass. I know that when dogs have upset stomachs, they eat grass. But she wouldnt come inside for an hour he said, he would call her name and she just wouldnt come.
Then today, while i was at school. My dad let the dogs out to go potty and then he fed them, Sam would barely touch her food, then returned to her kennel and wouldnt come out. So when I came home he told me about what happened. I was really concerned and she always comes to me right when I come home, and when she doesnt I know something is wrong. So I go down stairs and ask her to come and she just stayed. I noticed she had a little stuffed animal ducky. So I grabbed the ducky and took it out of ther kennel. She came out, grabbed it, and when back in. So I took it out agian, she wasnt mad or anything, and held it. She came out so I shut her kennel door, and she sat on my lap and shook and the hair on her back stood up. I grabbed the ducky and brought it up in my room so she could be away from the other dogs. She still acted really weird so I just gave her a bunch of attention.
I know this was long, but im really worried about my baby. I dont know if I need to take her to the vet or something.
please tell me what I should do. thank you.
