Title Health Concerns in a Dachshund Dog

Dachshund dogs are specifically known for their unique physical attributes. Their quirky structure which is characterized by long bodies and short legs have caused most people to refer to them as "hot dogs." Consequently, the same traits that set them apart from other dogs also serve as potential causes for future health problems.

As is the case with most long-bodied dogs, studies show that Dachshund dogs are in fact, prone to various spinal problems. These issues are greatly influenced by either genetics or the Dachshund's immediate environment, in some cases both. Certain activities such as excessive jumping or stair climbing, or high-impact activities may cause stress on your Dachshund's vertebrae. As far as genetics goes, when a genetically inferior Dachshund is made to breed with another, there is a great chance that serious skeletal conditions may be passed on to its offspring.

Invertebral Disk Disease or IVD is among the list of health concerns for Dachshunds. This disease is characterized by herniated disks in the dog's lower back. Dachshunds with IVD experience severe pain in the lower back and neck. IVD may be treated either medically or surgically depending on the severity of the case. As a preventive measure, try not to have your Dachshund engage in extra strenuous activities.

As with the case with other dogs, obesity can also cause strain on your Dachshund's spine. Due to their unique skeletal structure, it is easier for Dachshund's to gain weight. Unfortunately, obesity can also result to Acanthosis Nigricans. Acanthosis is more commonly known as the abnormal darkening of the skin, however this disease produces certain effects that are quite unique to Dachshunds.

As a result of this disease, the skin around the Dachshund's armpits and groin darken and thicken to the point of developing infection causing bacteria. Though this genetic disease is untreatable, it can be controlled by administering steroids, melatonin injections, and the regular use of anti-seborrheic shampoos. To avoid developing this disease, make sure your Dachshund steers clear of obesity. Ensure that your Dachshund gets the daily exercise that it needs, but of course, remember not to have it overexert itself.

Dachshunds are not high maintenance dogs. Each dog breed is prone to a certain health risk, one way or another. All you can really do is make sure that your Dachshund maintains a healthy lifestyle under your careful watch. This includes a healthy diet and regular exercise. However, for future reference it is always better to check with your breeder first before acquiring a new addition to your home. Learning about your Dachshund's history will help you to determine what things you should watch out for in the future.

Odd behaviour in dog?
My dachshund dog was running around whining one day and constantly wanting to be held which didn't shock me because she occasionly did that. My other dog had puppies the puppies were around 6 weeks old at the time and were being weened by their mother. That same day my dachshund attacked the dog that had the babies and took them away from her and ever since she's thought that she is their mother. She even started producing milk for them. Now they are way past the weaning stage and they have teethe and can eat hard dog food perfectly fine and she still allows them to suck on her. They're probably around 2 months old now. She's very protective of them too. She will attack other dogs that get around them while they are sucking on her. I think this is really odd and have never heard of any other dog doing this? how about you?

dachshund dogs and breeding?
I posted a question a few minutes ago about breeding family. I know what kind of dog I have and I have a very well paying job..just trying to make question shorter. I have bred dogs before and am very careful about genetics but with another breed. My dog just had puppies and vet said it was okay to breed inside litter as long as not father and daughter. If that would hurt the litter I will sell all the puppies so that doesn't happen...just wanted to know if it is really safe or do I need to switch vets?
