How long does it take for canine thyroid tablets to take effect?
My 6-year-old Cocker Spaniel has a T4 thyroid level of 0.6 so he's been put on 0.5 thyroxine daily. How long until I see a noticeable improvement in his skin, ears and behaviour (slight aggressive tendency)? Is this an 'overnight fix' like human hormones can be, or will it take a while to build up in his system?

The cost of a thyroid profile #4 for dogs.?
What's the cost of a canine thyroid profile #4 where you live/work? I brought my dog in for odd spots on either side of his body that appeared following an illness as a result of bacteria at a dog park. They're symmetrical on right and left sides and look like bruises beneath my Boxer's short fur. Vet said they were alopecia and that they could be the result of allergy, thyroid and I forget what else. She took a small skin scraping ($37.50) and recommended a "simple thyroid test". Normally I ask the cost just so I'm not bowled over later. It was $159.50 and what's done is done but I'm curious as to what others charge for the same lab work.

Thyroid Cancer in 10 year old Shih Tzu?
A week and a half ago while bathing my 10 year old Shih Tzu I discovered a mass on his neck. I took him to the vet the following day and 5 fine needle aspirations were done. The pathology reports were sketchy because there was so much blood in the samples, but the final word was "suspect thyroid carcinoma". Has anyone had experience with this? I asked the vet what she would do in these circumstances. She said she would have it removed and it would give my beloved constant companion a couple more years. He would have to go to the Veterinary College or referral centre where they have an intensive care unit because there are very large blood vessels in the area of the thyroid and if, during the surgery, they ran into a lot of bleeding my puppy would have to be in an ICU unit where they could deal with it. I am so torn about what to do. She estimated the surgery would be between $2,000. and $3,000. While I don't have a lot of money, I can get the money together if that's the decision I make. I definitely don't want him to suffer because I have always told him I would never let anyone or anything hurt him. I keep holding him, looking in his always trusting eyes, crying and think I've come to the right answer, but the next day I'm in a totally different place. So, if anyone has had personal experience with canine thyroid cancer I would very much appreciate anything you can tell me about your experience. Thank you.
