Canine Coughing
Dog Coughing - Five Common Causes of Canine Coughing
Dog coughing can occur for many different reasons, some of them serious and others minor. Your dog can cough if he drinks water too fast, or he can cough due to lung or heart conditions. Other common causes include parasites, allergies, and distemper. This article will take a look at some of the common causes of Canine Coughing.
Kennel Cough
As it's name suggests, the main symptom of this disease is frequent coughing. Dogs with a healthy immune system can get over it in roughly two weeks. However, puppies and smaller breeds may develop thick secretions that can cause pneumonia. This can be a life-threatening condition.
Distemper
One of the next common causes of dog coughing is distemper. Most canines are vaccinated from this disease, but all of them aren't. This disease can be fatal to puppies and dogs without a healthy immune system. Distemper causes symptoms that mimic a human's head cold. They include a dry cough, yellow discharge from eyes and nose, and a relatively high fever.
Roundworms
Roundworms are internal parasites that can also cause Canine Coughing. After infecting your dog, they wind up living in his intestine. Dogs because infected by ingesting soil that has been contaminated with eggs. Once the eggs hatch, the worms crawl up your dog's windpipe which results in coughing. A light infestation of roundworms is easily treatable.
Heartworms
Heartworms on the other hand present a much more serious problem. An infestation of these worms is often fatal. By the time your dog starts to cough, the disease has already progressed to an advanced stage. Treatment involves a series of injections given weeks apart. The first injection contains arsenic which will kill the worms. The next injection is aimed at destroying microfilariae circulating in the blood.
Tonsillitis
Infectious tonsillitis is a condition in which your dog's tonsils become swollen and painful. These two symptoms prompt your dog to try to cough the tonsils up violently. Some dogs will also paw at their mouths. Treatment usually involves giving your dog antibiotics for a few weeks until the infection is cleared up.
As you now know, dog coughing can be caused by various dog illnesses. If you want to learn about different conditions that can affect your beloved pet, such as canine tapeworms, stop by dog-illnesses.com today!
kennel cough vs canine cough?
I have 3 chihuahua's and as normal they do the coughing and gagging due to their age and the common trachael problems chihuaha's get.
However, last week we adoped a dog from the pound. The dog came with his paperwork and has had all of his shots, he was well taken care of. Now my chihuahuas have a different kind of cough, sounds dry, but yet their nose is running and they are sneezing. I was reading on the net that this does not necessarily have to be kennel cough, since the new dog introduced to the house was vacinated. It could be because of the amount of animals and the fact that the chihuahuas do not go out that often. They do not act sick , have an appetite, play , not feverish. I order some drops from petmeds.com that says it treats confined animals. Is there anything else I can do like run a vaporizer? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. ( My chihuaha's do not have bordella drops when they get thier anual shots, as I almost lost one due to a allergy to it)

Kennel (Canine) Cough and Vaccinations?
I was wondering:
I was informed that if a puppy is found to have Kennel Cough and is treated while in the process of being vaccinated for (example the 8week puppy vaccination) that the treatment for Kennel Cough counters the puppy's vaccinations and in fact the puppy should be treated for the Kennel Cough and a wait period of 10 day after the vet clears the Kennel Cough only then should the pup receive puppy vaccinations. I wonder if anyone can help clear and verify this info in literature or sites I can research this information. The help is greatly appreciated.
Let's say the pup was vaccinated and then it was established that she had Kennel Cough and needed antibiotics. Should the pup have been revaccinated as the antibiotic could have offset the vaccinations as vaccinations are virus strains to help the immunity develope resistance?
And if so--is there literature or sites to confirm? Again any directions and information is helpful. Thanks in advance.
If the pup is sick and a vaccination is given does that make them more susceptible to becoming sick simply from the vaccination or other environmental causes? If so is there documentation on this topic?

If you vaccinate your dog do you choose to use an intranasal or injectable vaccine for Canine Cough & why?
I would like info particularly from people who have dogs that are at high risk, ie: likely to be exposed to Canine Cough. I have a decision to make in terms of injectable or intranasal vaccine for "working" dogs who are at high risk because of the kennelling situation (unavoidable at this stage) and want to make the best informed decision. Thanks!

My jack Russell/shelter mix is really aggressive towards her toys..help?
My 8 month old Sheltie/jack Russell girl is very posessive and extremley aggressive with her toys, she had puppies six weeks ago and she needed her pink fluffy bird with her during labour. She never lets them out of her sight (her toys not the puppies) and shakes them violentley ALL THE TIME, is this like her taking out her anger on having puppies so young or something? haha. that sounds crazy..
Just saying we didn't purposley get her pregnant, we got her from a shelter and she had Canine cough at the time and the vet told us she had to get better before she was de-sexed, so we did and then the cat scratched her, so we took her to the vet and she sad she was pregnant, 1 week later some puppies arrived...
Sorry in the title I meant Sheltie :s
