Allergy Dog Food
Guide to Allergy Dog Food
When a dog has skin problems, we rarely suspect these as food allergies or sensitivities. As most dogs keep eating the same type of dog food for years, the food usually escapes our radar as the problem. But dogs, like humans, can develop sensitivity to any food or additive at any time. Recent estimates indicate that 10 to 15 percent of all allergic skin diseases in dogs are caused by food allergy. In such cases, they should be given Allergy Dog Food, i.e., food that does not cause allergic reactions.
As dog food is made up of a combination of ingredients, it is difficult to pinpoint exactly which is causing the allergy. The most common ingredients that can cause problems in a dog include beef, chicken, corn, eggs, fish, lamb, milk, preservatives, pork, soy, wheat, and whey.
The primary symptom that appears in a dog having food allergy is itchy skin.
Other symptoms may include anal itching, ear inflammations, hair loss, licking front paws, loss of appetite, face rubbing, and head shaking. Sometimes asthma-like symptoms, behavioral changes, diarrhea, flatulence, seizures, sneezing, and vomiting can also be observed.
When you conclude after consultations with your veterinarian, that food may be the underlying cause of your dog's allergy, then you can begin an elimination diet. Discard all the foods in the dog's diet that are included in the list above, and give him/her Allergy Dog Food, which may be a commercial or homemade diet comprising ingredients the dog has never eaten before.
The homemade Allergy Dog Food should comprise two parts starch and one part protein. Duck, salmon, soy, venison, and rabbit may form the protein part, and rice and potatoes the starch, but soy and rice cannot be always called safe substitutes. Some animal medical centers recommend duck and potato based foods as allergy dog food.
You can also choose a special commercial food blends as allergy dog food. As the homemade food is not nutritionally complete, it should not be continued for more than 8 weeks.
Whatever allergy dog food you choose for your pet, it should be the only food the dog ingests during the elimination period. So, say adieu to table scraps, dog biscuits, dog bones, rawhide chews, vitamins, minerals or chewable heartworm pills.
If symptoms improve during the elimination period, you can reintroduce each of the eliminated food items one at a time. Each food should be tested for a week before another is introduced. This will help you to pinpoint which foods may be causing problems if symptoms resurface. And once you detect the offensive food, it will be easier for you to choose the right allergy dog food to keep your pet free from allergy.

What to do about what we think is an allergic reaction with my dog?
My dog, who is part Maltese, is allergic to pretty much everything... No chicken, no pork... We got a list back from the vet and she is very limited. We buy allergy dog food which she and our other dog just love.
We try to keep her diet limited. We bought some dog treats and gave her some, and we noticed the rash. We stopped giving her the dog food, but it failed to go away.
There are many bumps on her belly and it's very red. I can't tell if she has bumps anywhere else, as she has long hair. We gave her Benadryl (as recommended by a friend with a lot of experience with dogs) but it still hasn't worked.
It seems to not be working... It usually makes me drowsy and sleepy, maybe a different reaction with dogs? Anyways, the rash still isn't gone, and now we're wondering what we can do.
We will watch it over the next few days... She may just be eating something in the garden, but she isn't that kind of dog.
Any tips on identification/treatment?
We didn't stop giving her the dog food, we stopped giving her the treats.

*Urgent : I need help with a difficult dog situation?
I adopted a sweet mixed breed dog from a shelter about 2 years ago (she is 3 years old). I love her very much.
She is having constant problems with licking her feet raw, she licks the skin off, sometimes they will weep, it is very painful for her, and it hurts to walk.
I have had her to the vet repeatedly for this problem. She has been treated with numerous antihistamines and depomedrol shots and courses of oral prednisone and liquids/sprays that treat the paws topically. I have spent money on expensive anti-allergy dog food (the no corn, no gluten, no beef stuff). When she is on the steroids she improves.... then once off, within a week to 10 days she is licking her feet raw again. I bought her paw boots to try to keep her from licking, but they won't stay on.
I am starting to feel like there is no fix for this chronic problem. I really need some suggestions. I am starting to consider that euthanasia may be the humane thing to do for her. I love her enough to not want to see her hurting if I can't fix this problem. I can't afford too many more vet bills... it is getting too much for me to handle.
Please give me some advice! Thanks in advance.
The food she is currently eating is Nature's Recipe Vegetarian (Healthy Skin). The only snacks I give her now is also the same brand (vegetarian/anti-allergy).
I believe I'll give the raw food diet a try. I want her to feel better and get back to being a happy and healthy dog.
I was quoted $450 to have her allergy tested (which is not possible right now). The vet said that it was most likely an allergy to pollen.
She has been treated monthly with Frontline and has not had any fleas. I have not removed any ticks either. Honestly, she is so unhappy she doesn't want to go outside much anymore. She has lost her "sparkle", and it breaks my heart.
I'm going to call tomorrow to find her a derm. vet. I hope she will be feeling better soon. Thanks for all the help!

Why are limited ingredient (allergy) dog foods more expensive than regular dog food?
One my dogs has a laundry list of foods she's allergic to, so recently I decided to put her on a limited ingredient food. I've been researching like crazy and I noticed they are WAY more expensive than regular dog food, even grain freed dog food! For instance, Wellness Super5mix sells for about $26 for a 15lb bag where I live, but Wellness Simple Solutions sells for $35 for an 11lb bag! About the cheapest limited ingredient food I can find is California natural and that's about the same price as Wellness Super5mix.I had her on CA natural for a couple months and her itchiness has improved a ton, but it gives her HORRID gas and loose stools, so I'm probably going to try and find something else (I really would love to do raw, but I live with people who are SUPER against it and where I live even the "cheap" meat is really expensive so it would cost me an arm an a leg to feed).
If limited ingredient diets have LESS ingredients in them which, in theory, should make them less expensive to produce, shouldn't they cost less?
I'm not talking comparing something full of by-products and fillers to grain free. I'm talking even comparing grain free to limited ingredient foods. For example Wellness CORE is more expensive then Wellness simple solutions. Wellness CORE doesn't have fillers and by-products... :/
I've tried Taste of The Wild...she's reacts to it. One of the things she's allergic to is one of the foods that's supposed to be one of the most allergy friendly...potatoes! Let's see if I can remember off the top of my head what's she's allergic to...
Corn, wheat, beet pulp, soy, any yeast based ingredients, sorghum, certain food dyes...I know there's more but I'm totally blanking lol. I have it written down but it's in her vet file in my file cabinet.
The vet said sometimes it can be an interaction of foods that can cause a reaction as well. That's why the simple ingredient foods work so well...
What's with the TD!? I swear it's not me guys! :(
Leigh: Great suggestions, although like I said it's been a few months and the smelly gas just never went away. I also have the problem that the kibbles are huge and my poor dog only weighs 12lbs so she has kinda a hard time eating them sometimes. They make a small bite version, but the only flavor they make it in is Lamb and Rice and for some reason she just does not like Lamb based foods at all. Like I said I've tried Taste of the Wild, but it has potato, tomato, and fermentation products in it, all of which she's allergic to. Natural Balance is sky high where I live, $40 for a 15 lb bag! It also has potato in it. I just looked at Pinnacle and it has Potato, tomato, and yeast based products too :( THIS IS SO FRUSTRATING!!!!
